From Fear to Confidence: My Journey to Improve My English Skills

Guest Article - Udari

When I started learning English seriously, I faced many challenges in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Although I understood basic grammar rules, I was afraid to use English in real-life situations. My biggest problem was speaking. I was scared of making mistakes and being laughed at by others. Because of this fear, I avoided speaking English in class and even with my friends.

Listening was also very difficult for me. When I watched English movies, videos, or listened to conversations, people spoke very fast. I could not understand many words, and this made me feel frustrated. Writing was another challenge. I did not know how to organize my ideas clearly or use suitable words. This became a serious problem when I had to speak or write in English at school, tuition classes, and even when talking to tourists who visited our area.

To overcome these difficulties, I decided to take small and simple steps. First, I accepted that making mistakes is a natural part of learning a language. I began speaking English with my close friends and supportive teachers. Slowly, my fear reduced and my confidence increased.

I also watched English videos with subtitles and listened to simple podcasts to improve my listening skills. I read short stories, newspapers, and online articles to develop my reading ability. To improve my writing, I kept a small diary and wrote about my daily activities in English.

Today, I feel much more confident using English in both educational and social situations. I understand that regular practice and patience are the keys to learning English successfully.

Behind the scenes: I decided to write this article because I wanted to share my real feelings about learning English. When my friend told me about the blog topic, I remembered how scared I was to speak English at first. Writing this helped me reflect on my progress and how small steps helped me gain confidence. I hope my experience encourages other learners who feel afraid to use English.

Read to understand: Not just to finish

Reading is one of the most important English skills because it supports learning in all subjects. Through reading, students improve their vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and thinking ability. For teachers, reading is a powerful tool to build language proficiency and academic success among learners. Reading is not just saying words aloud. It is the process of understanding ideas, messages, meanings, and cultural values shared by the writer. Through reading, students are also exposed to different cultures, traditions, and ways of life, which helps them develop respect for diversity. Effective reading starts before the actual reading begins . In primary classes, teachers should first help students look at the title, pictures, or headings. This helps students predict what the text may be about and activates their prior knowledge, including cultural experiences. Teachers can ask simple questions like “What do you see?” or “What do you think this story is about?” to create interest an...
